As I piece together the introduction, taking elements of what I've already discussed about the setting, as well as making it something easily understandable, I discovered something important: Our huge event that caused the islands to rise needs a name.
Every good world changing event has some name that's capitalized and put in all the history books for all to see. While I'm sure several of the different cultures, species, and islands have their own name for it, there's always that universal name to fall back on.
I noticed we've used several ourselves, and I think it's time to settle on one "winning" name in which to use every time we wish to speak of the event to the reader.
So here are some of the names we've used or I've come up with:
The Sundering
The Shattering
The Event
The Great Split
The Great Rise
The Cataclysm
etc, etc, etc. Pick a favorite, come up with your own, just thought it's time to reel in something specific.
The Breaking
ReplyDeleteThe Rising
um...
I'm kinda fond of The Shattering, though that appears to be the name of a Youth Epic Fantasy novel about owls, and the name of a WoW book.
Hm...
Day of Tears
Day of Wrath (Dies Irae, Dies Illa, solvet saeclum in favilla)
Maybe a more optimistic take..um..
The Beginning
The Dawning (I like that one..)
Yay! More stuff to choose between!

I think the more optimistic take fits better for the Age in which people started to resettle and thrive again.
Personally I think you want to reinforce the fact that the whole world ripped itself apart and chunks of it are floating above it now and everyone's afraid to go down there.

I'm sure there's no cataclysmic sounding name that hasn't been used by another fantasy setting, there's only so many words that mean "End of the World in a Horrible Way"
Also, it turns out "The Sundering," one of my faves is a WoW book too, atleast, that was the first result in Google (which I like to use to spot check names to remember where I stole them from without realizing it)
ReplyDeleteAlso, continuing the "S" trend. I like The Splintering too.
